Julian Bond, the civil rights leaders and former chair of the NAACP, has spent the last 20 years on the history department faculty at the University of Virginia. He is retiring this week.
To honor Professor Bond, the university’s College of Arts & Sciences has established the Julian Bond Professorship in Civil Rights and Social Justice. To fund the endowed chair, a fundraising event is being held at the Plaza Hotel in New York City. Additional funds for the endowed chair will be raised from an online auction. Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, and Bill Russell are among those who have contributed memorabilia for the auction.
