The New Pusey Minister in the Memorial Church at Harvard University

Jonathan L. Walton was appointed Pusey Minister in the Memorial Church and Plummer Professor of Christian Morals at Harvard University. The Plummer professorship was established in 1854 to provide an endowed position to oversee the moral and spiritual development of Harvard students.

Dr. Walton’s appointment is effective on July 1. He is filling positions previously held by the late Peter J. Gomes, who was pastor of Memorial Church at Harvard for more than 40 years before his death last year.

Dr. Walton has been a tenured professor at Harvard Divinity School since 2010. Previously, he was on the religious studies faculty at the University of California Riverside. He will continued to hold his post as a tenured professor at the Harvard Divinity School.

Dr. Walton is a graduate of Morehouse College and holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary. He is the author of Watch This! The Ethics and Aesthetics of Black Televangelists (New York University Press, 2009).
