Jackson State University Professor Named Associate Editor of Scientific Journal

Edmund C. Merem, associate professor of urban and regional planning in the School of Policy and Planning at Jackson State University, was appointed associate editor of the Journal of Scientific Research and Reports. The international, peer-reviewed journal publishes original research papers, reviews, short communications, and case reports in all areas of scientific research.

Dr. Merem is the author of Environmental Accounting for Oil and Gas: A North American Case Study of Canada and the Southeast of the United States (Edwin Mellen Press, 2010). He is currently working on his next book, entitled An Environmental History of African Americans.

Dr. Merem holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from York University in Ontario, Canada and a Ph.D. from Jackson State University.

The Huge Racial Gap in College Completion Rates

According to a new report from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, the percentage of students who began college in the fall of 2018 and earned a credential within six years rose to 61.1 percent. For Black students who enrolled in 2018, 43.8 percent had earned a degree or other credential within six years. This is more than 17 percentage points below the overall rate. And the racial gap has increased in recent years.

Dr. Maparyan, a distinguished academic and prolific scholar, had been serving as the executive director of the Wellesley Centers for Women and a professor of African Studies at Wellesley College in Massachusetts.
