Duke Art Historian Honored by the Smithsonian Institution

rickpowellRichard J. Powell, the John Spencer Bassett Professor of Art and Art History at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, received the Lawrence A. Fleischman Award for Scholarly Excellence in the Field of American Art History from Archives of American Art at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. Dr. Powell has taught at Duke since 1989.

Professor Powell is a graduate of Morehouse College in Atlanta. He earned a master of fine arts degree in printmaking at Howard University in Washington, D.C., and holds two master’s degrees and a Ph.D. in the history of art from Yale University.
