The University of Missouri-Kansas City has announced that is expanding its internship program with the Heartland Black Chamber of Commerce, formerly known as the Kansas Black Chamber of Commerce. The program offers instruction for students in the Black studies program at the university who are interested in entrepreneurship or business ownership.
Undergraduate and graduate students in Black studies will combine classroom learning with community service and on-site internships at small businesses in the area. Students must have a 3.0 grade point average and must have completed six hours of Black studies courses.
Adrienne Walker Hoard, professor and director of the Black studies program at the university, stated that “the partnership with the Black Studies Program and the Heartland Chamber will provide our students an opportunity to expand their education beyond the classroom into community engagement. It dually provides exposure to corporate America that our students may not otherwise experience and it provides exposure for corporate America to our students’ contemporary ways of knowing and navigating the local and global marketplaces.”
Dr. Hoard received a master of fine arts degree from the University of Michigan and an educational doctorate from the University of Illinois-Urbana/Champaign.
