Winston-Salem State University Scholar Mounts Book Drive for Nigerian Library Destroyed by Fire

Alice Etim is an associate professor of management information systems at Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina. When she learned that a fire had destroyed the library at her alma mater – the University of Jos in Nigeria – she knew she had to do something to help.

In collaboration with her husband, James Etim, a professor of education, and the Winston-Salem State University Association of Information Technology Professionals, Dr. Etim mounted a book drive. She collected more than 800 books from libraries and personnel collections of faculty members in business disciplines. Books on computer science, education, law, and statistics were also included.

With the support of the administration of the College of Arts, Sciences, Business, and Education, the books were shipped to Nigeria.

Dr. Etim notes that Winston-Salem State University’s motto is: “Enter to learn. Depart to serve.”  She explains, ‘there are urgent needs and opportunities to serve our less fortunate colleagues and partners as far as our hearts can reach.”
