Patti Bellinger was named chief of staff for Larry Bacow, the new president of Harvard University. As chief of staff, Bellinger will help advance the president’s university-wide agenda, assisting on major initiatives. She also will oversee the administrative and operational activities of the Office of the President. Bellinger will begin her new job on September 1.
Bellinger has been serving as a lecturer and senior fellow at the Kennedy School at the university. Earlier, Bellinger was executive director of the Center for Public Leadership and executive director of executive education at Harvard Business School.
“Patti brings tremendous experience and a distinguished background to the chief of staff role,” said President Bacow. “She has been a highly effective leader in both the corporate and nonprofit world. I enjoyed working with her at the Center for Public Leadership and am delighted to welcome Patti to our team, and I am confident we will benefit greatly from her wisdom, insight, and thoughtful, strategic approach.”
Bellinger is a graduate of Harvard University, where she majored in English and American literature.
In accepting her new appointment, Bellinger said that “this university has been in my life for almost 40 years, since I first arrived as a freshman in 1979. I’m grateful for this new opportunity to give back to an institution that has been a formative influence in my life.”

Congratulations on this new position as Chief of Staff to Harvard President Bow. I am really proud to have a smart black woman a “sista” with natural hair in this position. When you first got to Harvard, I was 10 years old. I had dreams and hopes and I am still working hard to make them come true. Folks like you can help downtrodden souls like me, by including hard working and commited staff to their team. Please consider those who will go the extra mile to include different folks from the Boston Area. I am referring to those who live in Dorchester, Mattapan and Roxbury who might not have the opportunity to attend Harvard but who stand to benefit greatly from your presence in the area by participating in activities on the Campus and so forth.
