Three African Americans Selected for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Positions in Academia

LaVar J. Charleston has been appointed vice chancellor for inclusive excellence at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Since 2021, he has served as the university’s deputy vice chancellor for diversity and inclusion, vice provost, and chief diversity officer. In his new position, he will retain his current title as the Elzie Higginbottom Director of Diversity, Equity, and Educational Achievement.

Dr. Charleston holds a master’s degree and Ph.D. in educational leadership and policy analysis from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Lynzie De Veres has been named assistant vice president for equity, equity investigations, and Title IX coordinator at the California Institute of Technology. Most recently, she was the assistant vice president for diversity and inclusion and Title IX administrator at Claremont McKenna College in California. Prior to joining the Claremont McKenna staff, she worked in the admissions department at Arizona State University.

De Veres holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Oberlin College in Ohio and a juris doctorate from Loyola Marymount University in California.

Marlon Blake has been promoted to associate dean of students and director of student diversity and inclusion at the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota. Prior to his new role, he served as the university’s assistant dean of students.

Dr. Blake is a graduate of Colorado State University, where he majored in sociology. He holds a master’s degree in student counseling from Western Illinois University and a doctor of education degree from California State University, Fullerton.
