In Memoriam: Nathan Howard Cook, 1939-2024

Nathan Howard Cook, longtime professor and administrator at historically Black Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri, passed away on November 1. He was 85 years old.

Dr. Cook began his career in education with teaching appointments at Oklahoma State University and Barber-Scotia College in Concord, North Carolina. In 1971, he transitioned to the faculty at Lincoln University. As a professor of biology, he taught courses on genetics, cell and molecular biology, histology, and general zoology.

Throughout his long tenure at Lincoln University, Dr. Cook held several academic leadership roles, including head of the department of biology, head of the department of natural sciences and mathematics, director of the Academic Enrichment Center, director of the minority biomedical support program, and program director for numerous federally funded grant projects. He also held various administrative posts, including vice president for academic affairs and vice president for administration and finance.

An HBCU graduate, Dr. Cook earned his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in biology from North Carolina Central University. He received his Ph.D. in zoology from Oklahoma State University.
