New Faculty Positions for Three Black Scholars

Lauren Bullock has been named director of the new major in sports media at Temple University in Philadelphia, With over 12 years of teaching and industry experience, she currently serves as an assistant professor of instruction in Temple’s Klein College of Media and Communication. Earlier in her career, she held roles with ESPN’s Wide World of Sports, Florida State University, and the University of Texas.

Dr. Bullock holds a bachelor’s degree in sport and recreation management from Temple University, a master’s degree in sport administration from Florida State University, and a Ph.D. in leadership and change from Antioch University.

Margo Brooks Carthon has been named director of the Barbara Bates Center for the Study of the History of Nursing at the University of Pennsylvania. She is the Tyson Family Endowed Term Chair for Gerontological Research, a full professor of nursing, and the associate director of the Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research. Her research focuses on the empirical relationships between the quality of nursing care and racial inequities in outcomes.

Dr. Brooks Carthon earned her bachelor’s degree from North Carolina A&T State University. She holds a master of nursing degree in psychiatric and adult health from the University of Pittsburgh and a Ph.D. in nursing from the University of Pennsylvania.

Munene Mwaniki has been selected to serve as interim director of the Global Black Studies program at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina. He has been a faculty member with the university for the past decade, currently holding the rank of associate professor of anthropology and sociology in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Dr. Mwaniki earned his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and exercise science and master’s degree in sports studies from Miami University in Ohio. He holds a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
