Tanya Walker has been selected to serve as interim dean of the University College at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. She will retain her current position as director of academic advancement programs. Earlier in her tenure with the university, she was assistant director of student success and retention coordinator for the division of enrollment management and student success.
A four-time HBCU graduate, Dr. Walker received her bachelor’s degree in business administration and marketing from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, two master’s degrees – in counseling and educational administration – from Prairie View A&M University in Texas, and her Ph.D. in urban higher education from Jackson State University in Mississippi.
Nicole Hall has been promoted to senior associate vice president for student affairs and dean of students at the University of Virginia. For the past two years, she has served as the university’s associate vice president for career and professional development. Earlier, she was director of career and professional development at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Dr. Hall holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Indiana University, an MBA from Pepperdine University in California, and a doctorate in educational leadership and cultural foundations from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Kimberly R. Moffitt has been named dean of the Cathy Hughes School of Communications at Howard University in Washington, D.C. She comes to Howard from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, where she is a professor of language, literacy, and culture and dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. She has authored or co-edited several books, including Blackberries and Redbones: Critical Articulations of Black Hair/Body Politics in Africana Communications (Hampton Press, 2010).
Dr. Moffitt earned her bachelor’s degree in political science and government from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, a master’s degree in communication from Boston University, and a Ph.D. in mass communication and media studies from Howard University.
Charles M. Smith has been named dean of the School of Business and Professional Studies at Gordon State College in Barnesville, Georgia. He comes to his new role from the Blinn College District in Texas, where he was academic dean for the division of business and mathematics. Earlier in his career, he was the business chair and an associate professor of management at South Georgia State College.
Dr. Smith is a graduate of Texas Wesleyan University, where he majored in business administration. He holds an MBA in finance from Dallas Baptist University and a Ph.D. in organization and management from Capella University.
