New Faculty Appointments for a Trio of Black Scholars

Eric Deggans has been named to the Knight Chair in Journalism and Media Ethics at Washington and Lee University in Virginia. A television critic, journalist, and educator, Deggans has served as a critic for National Public Radio and the Tampa Bay Times. He has had stints as an adjunct professor with Duke University and Indiana University. In 2012, he published Race-Baiter: How the Media Wields Dangerous Words to Divide a Nation (St. Martin’s Press).

Deggans is a graduate of Indiana University, where he earned dual-bachelor’s degrees in journalism and political science, respectively.

Royette T. Dubar has been granted tenure and promoted to associate professor of psychology at Wesleyan University in Connecticut. She currently directs the university’s Sleep and Psychosocial Adjustment Lab. As a developmental psychologist, she focuses on examining the direction of effects between sleep and psychosocial functioning among emerging adults.

Dr. Dubar holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from Brock University in Ontario.

Heidi Cruz-Austin has been granted tenure and promoted to associate professor of dance at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania. She danced with the Pennsylvania Ballet and was a founding member and dancer of BalletX – Philadelphia’s premier contemporary ballet. Her research involves efforts to soften the curve of ballet instruction to facilitate an easier acclimation process for aspiring dancers.

Cruz-Austin holds a master of fine arts degree from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia.
