The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Columbia University in New York City has announced the launch of a new Ph.D. program in African American and African diaspora studies.
Through collaboration with the Ivy League school’s Institute for Research in African American Studies, the new doctoral program aims to advance the next generation of scholars, activists, and leaders dedicated to the study of people of African descent across the globe. Students enrolled in the new program will benefit from an interdisciplinary curriculum that combines courses in African American and African diaspora studies with specialized research opportunities that deepen the understanding of Black histories, cultures, and intellectual traditions.
According to Columbia, the Ph.D. program is the first of its kind offered in New York City. Applications for the new degree will open during the fall 2025 semester, with the inaugural class slated to enroll in 2026.
