Five Black Scholars Selected for Dean Appointments at Universities

Mary McGriff has been appointed interim dean of the Deborah Cannon Partridge Wolfe College of Education at New Jersey City University. A faculty member since 2011, she has served as acting associate dean of the College of Education, chair of the literacy education department, and co-coordinator of the College of Education’s accreditation and program assessment. Before she transitioned to higher education, she was a middle school English teacher and an elementary school principal.

Dr. McGriff earned her master’s degree in educational leadership and her Ph.D. in literacy education at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

Vaughn J. Crichlow has been appointed dean of the School of Justice Studies at Roger Williams University in Bristol, Rhode Island. Currently, he is the director of research for the Institute for Municipal and Regional Policy at the University of Connecticut. Earlier, he was associate dean for academic affairs and student services in the College of Social Work and Criminal Justice at Florida Atlantic University. His recent projects have centered on enhancing community well-being, improving service delivery to vulnerable populations, and refining criminal justice policy.

Dr. Crichlow holds a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of the West Indies, a bachelor of laws degree from the University of London, a master’s degree in criminal justice from Rowan University in Glassboro, New Jersey, and a Ph.D. in criminal justice from Michigan State University.

Kimberly Jones is the new dean of the College of Engineering and Architecture at Howard University in Washington, D.C. Previously, she served as the college’s associate dean for research and graduate studies and chaired the department of civil and engineering. Most recently, she served as the HBCU’s associate provost for faculty affairs. Throughout her career, she has worked wth several national committees to develop policies on clean water access and environmental health.

Dr. Jones is an alumna of Howard University, where she majored in civil engineering. She holds a master’s degree in environmental engineering from the University of Illinois and a Ph.D. in the same discipline from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland.

RoSusan D. Bartee has been appointed dean of the Whitlowe R. Green College of Education at Prairie View A&M University in Texas. With over two decades of academic and administrative experience, she most recently served as a professor and chair of the department of educational leadership and higher education at the University of Central Florida. She has published extensively on topics related to educational leadership, systems change, and institutional development.

Dr. Bartee earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Tougaloo College in Mississippi, a master’s degree in liberal studies from Northwestern University in Illinois, and a Ph.D. in education policy studies from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Kwamie Dunbar has been selected to serve as interim dean of the Business School at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts. Before joining the institute’s faculty in 2022, he was an associate professor of finance at the Simmons University School of Business in Boston. Earlier in his career, he was an associate dean of the Welch College of Business and Technology at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut. His expertise lies in blockchain assets for social good and sustainability, empirical asset pricing, cryptocurrencies, financial technologies, and futures markets.

A graduate of the University of the West Indies, Dr. Dunbar earned an MBA in economics and finance from Sacred Heart University, a master’s degree in applied mathematics from Fairfield University, and a Ph.D. in financial economics from Fordham University in the Bronx, New York.
