Four Black Scholars Selected for Dean Appointments at Universities

Raquel Monroe has been appointed dean of the Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts at Howard University in Washington, D.C. She comes to her new role from the University of Texas at Austin, where she was a full professor and associate dean of graduate education and academic affairs for the College of Fine Arts. Her research interests include Black social dance, queer Black feminism, popular culture, and the efficacy of collaboration in driving social change.

Dr. Monroe received bachelor’s degrees in dance and theatre, and a master’s degree in communication from the University of Arizona. She holds a Ph.D. in culture and performance from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Randy V. Bradley has been named dean of the Jack C. Massey College of Business at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. With over two decades of academic experience, he most recently taught as a faculty member in supply chain management and information systems at the University of Tennessee. Outside of academia, he co-founded the healthcare technology company Q-Leap Health, Inc. and founded his own consulting firm, RV Bradley, LLC.

A three-time graduate of Auburn University in Alabama, Dr. Bradley holds a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering, a master’s degree in management information systems, and a Ph.D. in the management of information technology and innovation.

Alexia Hudson-Ward has been named university librarian and dean of the library at Georgetown University. For the past five years, Dr. Hudson-Ward has served as the associate director for research and learning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Libraries. She was recently appointed vice president/president-elect of the Association of College and Research Libraries.

Dr. Hudson-Ward is a graduate of Temple University in Philadelphia, where she double-majored in English and African American studies. She holds a master of library and information science degree from the University of Pittsburgh and a Ph.D. in the same discipline from Simmons University in Boston.

Jewel Bronaugh has been selected to serve as interim dean of the College of Agriculture at Virginia State University. She previously served as the college’s dean from 2011 to 2015 before transitioning to leadership roles at the state and federal level. In 2021, she became the first Black woman appointed as the United States Deputy Secretary of Agriculture. Most recently, she served as president and CEO of the 1890 Universities Foundation.

Dr. Bronaugh received her Ph.D. in career and technical education from Virginia Tech.
