Higher Education Gifts or Grants of Interest to African Americans

Here is this week’s news of grants or gifts to historically Black colleges and universities or for programs of particular interest to African Americans in higher education.

Lane College in Jackson, Tennessee, has received a $150,000 investment from the State of Tennessee to enhance the HBCU’s wellness program and support students’ physical, mental, and emotional health. The new funding will be used to renovate Lane’s football practice field into a multi-use shared space for student activities; construct a new outdoor volleyball facility for recreational offerings; and install wellness zones around the campus.

Grambling State University in Louisiana has received more than $20 million in state funding to support various programs and initiatives. Secured through multiple legislative acts, the funds will support general operational needs; athletic programs and athletic facility renovations; infrastructure improvements; and a new Ph.D. program in criminology.

Alabama State University has been awarded two grants from the American Honda Motor Company to support the HBCU’s Office of Career Services. The first grant, worth $75,000, will be used to install an electric vehicle charging station on campus. The second grant, worth $40,000, will support the university’s Driving Force Academy, a program that helps students obtain their driver’s licenses while attending Alabama State.
