Jason Geary has recently assumed the role of provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey.
Since 2020, Dr. Geary has served as dean of Rutgers’ Mason Gross School of the Arts. During this time, he has launched several interdisciplinary programs with other university departments, including initiatives aimed at promoting the benefit of the arts for health and wellness. He also established the school’s Office for Advising and Student Success and developed partnerships with local K-12 schools.
Prior to joining the Rutgers faculty, Dr. Geary was director of the School of Music at the University of Maryland. Earlier, he taught at the University of Michigan for over a decade, rising to the role of associate dean for graduate studies in the School of Music, Theatre, & Dance.
In addition to his administrative responsibilities, Dr. Geary holds the rank of distinguished professor. His research centers on nineteenth-century German music, with a focus on how perceptions of ancient Greece influenced German culture, identity, and politics. Earlier this year, he published Musical Meaning and Interpretation: Perspectives, Reflections, Critique (Oxford University Press, 2025).
“I’m honored to lead ongoing efforts to reach new heights of research and student success in New Brunswick,” said Dr. Geary. “I’ve spent my career building connections to maximize impact on campus and in the community, and I’m eager to continue this work as provost in service to all faculty, staff and students.”
Dr. Geary received his bachelor’s degree in piano performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in California. He holds a master’s degee in musicology from the University of Michigan and a doctorate in musicology from Yale University.
