Johnson C. Smith University Has Been Placed on Probation by Accrediting Agency

Johnson C. Smith University (JSCU), a historically Black educational institution in Charlotte, North Carolina, has been placed on accreditation probation.

According to a recent article from Elvis Menayese of WFAE in Charlotte, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) has placed the HBCU on probation for one year. A recent review of the university’s operations determined that the HBCU has failed to meet standards related to financial responsibility and internal control, management of external funds, and compliance with federal and state requirements.

Due to these findings, the SACSCOC has placed JCSU on “probation for good cause.” In June 2026, the agency will reexamine the university’s operations and consider four options regarding next steps: remove the probationary status without an additional report; remove the probationary status, but require a follow-up report; continue the probationary period; or revoke JCSU’s accreditation.

In a statement acquired by WFAE, JCSU President Valerie Kinloch stated:

“We are fully committed to strengthening all of our internal controls as we strive to become a nationally ranked, top-performing HBCU. Over the last year and a half, we have worked hard to improve our overall operations. In the weeks and months ahead, additional improvements will be made as we prepare for an on-campus SACSCOC special committee visit in 2026. Being placed on good cause provides us with an important opportunity to ensure continuous internal controls.”

Until the June 2026 review, Johnson C. Smith University will remain an accredited institution.
