Centenary University President Selected as Democratic Candidate for Lieutenant Governor of New Jersey

Mikie Sherrill, the 2025 Democratic nominee for governor of New Jersey, has selected Centenary University President Dale Caldwell as her running mate

In 2023, Dr. Caldwell was named the fifteenth president of Centenary University, making him the institution’s first Black president since its founding in 1867. Located in Hackettstown, New Jersey, the university enrolls around 1,000 undergraduates and 500 graduate students, according to the most recent federal data. Black students represent 8 percent of the undergraduate population.

Before Centenary, Dr. Caldwell was executive director of the Rothman Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Madison, New Jersey. He previously served on the New Brunswick Board of Education for 26 years, including six years as board president. Outside of academia, Dr. Caldwell was the first Black president and CEO of the United States Tennis Association and is a founder of the Black Tennis Hall of Fame.

A native of Boston, Dr. Caldwell holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Princeton University, an MBA in finance from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and a doctorate in education administration from Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey.
