Paul O. Biney, recently retired professor of mechanical engineering at Prairie View A&M University in Texas, has received the Outstanding Student Section Advisor Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineering (ASME). First established in 1990, the honor recognizes faculty advisors who go above and beyond in supporting ASME student chapters. Dr. Biney is only the second advisor from an HBCU to receive the national award.
“I am truly honored to receive this award from ASME,” said Dr. Biney. “It reflects not just my efforts, but the hard work and enthusiasm of all the students involved in our section, with support from Dr. Jeffrey Streator, department head of mechanical engineering. Together, we have created an environment that fosters learning, collaboration, and innovation.”
Dr. Biney has spent the past four decades teaching, mentoring, and advancing mechanical engineering education, including 25 years as advisor of PVAMU’s ASME student section. The chapter was first created in 1972 and has since grown to a community of more than 70 students who benefit from professional development, networking, research, and scholarship opportunities.
In 1984, Dr. Biney began his career with PVAMU as a visiting instructor. He rose through the academic ranks, ultimately earning the title of full professor in 2003. During his long tenure, he had stints as head of the department of mechanical engineering, as well as leadership roles with various research centers. He has a wide range of teaching and research interests, including fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and heat transfer.
Dr. Biney holds a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Oklahoma State University and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of Houston.
