New Academic Appointments for Four Black Scholars

Michelle McCay was recently named interim assistant dean for academic affairs for the School of Public Health at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She has been a clinical assistant professor with the university since 2022. Earlier, she spent more than a decade as a faculty member in health sciences at DePaul University in Chicago. Throughout her career, she has focused her work on improving public health and maternal and child health outcomes.

Dr. McCay received her bachelor’s degree in health administration and planning from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She holds a master of public health degree and a doctor of public health degree both from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Lance Collins has been appointed vice president of the greater Washington, D.C. area for Virginia Tech. In this role, he will serve as the senior university official responsible for leading the university’s growing presence in the nation’s capital and surrounding region. Since 2020, he has served as a professor of mechanical engineering and the founding executive director and vice president of Virginia Tech’s campus in Alexandria, Virginia.

An honors graduate of Princeton University, Dr. Collins holds a master’s degree and Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania.

Terry Allen recently joined the University of Southern California faculty as an assistant professor in the Gould School of Law. As a public law scholar, he researches and writes about the relationship between policing and constitutional law, particularly in the education domain. Before his new appointment, he was a research assistant professor and the inaugural Race, Place, and Equity Fellow at the University of Virginia School of Law.

Dr. Allen received his bachelor’s degree in rhetoric from the University of California, Berkeley, his master’s degree in education policy from Columbia University, and both his juris doctorate and Ph.D. in education from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Marcus Denard Johnson has been promoted from interim director to permanent director of the FSU/Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training, a three-year MFA program affiliated with Florida State University’s School of Theatre. Johnson has an extensive background as a theater administrator, actor, and director. His past experience include service as the resident artist for Titan Theatre Company in New York City and artistic director of Hope Repertory Theatre in Michigan.

Johnson holds a master of fine arts degree from the Asolo Conservatory and a master’s degree in adolescent special education from Hunter College in New York.
