Terrance Tumey is the new director of athletics, recreation, and instruction at the California Institute of Technology. His background in athletics includes key administrative and coaching roles in both higher education and professional settings. Within academia, he has previously served as director of athletics for California State University, Fresno; Claremount-Mudd-Scripps Athletics; the University of California, Davis; and Dominican University of California.
Tumey earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of California, Los Angeles, where he both played and later coached football. He also holds an MBA from UCLA.
Linda Chavers is the inaugural director of restorative practices and mediation at Holyoke Community College in Massachusetts. Her professional expertise includes crisis management, curriculum design, diversity support, and organizational development. In addition to her work as a writer and consultant, Dr. Chavers also has an extensive background in higher education, including various roles at Temple University in Philadelphia and Harvard University.
Dr. Chavers is a graduate of New York University, where she majored in cultural studies. She holds a master’s degree in English literature and a Ph.D. in African and African American studies from Harvard University.
Stannis Smith has been named general counsel at Delaware State University. He comes to the historically Black university from the City University of New York School of Medicine, where he was executive general counsel and labor designee. Alongside his experience in senior policy and advisory roles for the Obama, Trump, and Biden administrations and work in private practice, Smith previously served as director of financial aid at George Washington University.
Smith earned his juris doctorate from George Washington University Law School.
Derrick Brooks is the new chief operating officer for University of South Florida Athletics. Most recently, he was executive vice president of corporate and community development for Vinik Sports Group. He is also the president and founder of Brooks Charities and co-founder of Brooks-DeBartolo Collegiate High School. From 1995-2009, Brooks was a linebacker with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who won Super Bowl XXXVII in 2003.
Brooks is a graduate of Florida State University, where he was four-year letterman and three-time All American player.
Patricia M. Lynch has been named associate vice chancellor and chief human resources officer at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She has served in this capacity on an interim basis since January 2025. A staff member since 2017, Lynch has held a series of increasingly senior roles in human resources, including director of equal employment opportunity and affirmative action and executive director of human resources.
Lynch received her bachelor’s degree in communications studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her MBA from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
