Morehouse School of Medicine Joins New Initiative to Integrate the Arts Into Medicine and Public Health

The Morehouse School of Medicine, a historically Black medical school in Atlanta, recently joined the Neuroarts Academic Network (NAN), a collaborative initiative that aims to advance the transformative power of the arts on human health.

The emerging field of neuroarts explores how creative expression can be embedded in mainstream medicine, public health, and across society to improve health and well-being for all. Led by the International Arts + Mind Lab Center for Applied Neuroaesthetics at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and the Health, Medicine, & Society Program at the Aspen Institute, NAN aims to make neuroarts an established academic and professional field across disciplines. So far, more than 35 institutions have joined the new academic initiative.

“We are very excited to be at the forefront of an innovative effort to examine the ways the arts can have a positive impact on health outcomes,” said Joseph Tyndall, executive vice president for health affairs and dean at the Morehouse School of Medicine. “This initiative has significant potential to redefine the medicinal toolbox to include artistic endeavors in both the healing process and preventative health care.”
