Two Universities Hit With Civil Rights Complaints Regarding Scholarships for Underserved Students

The Equal Protection Project of the Legal Insurrection Foundation has recently filed two civil rights complaints with the U.S. Department of Education against the University of Central Arkansas and the University of California, Los Angeles, respectively, for promoting scholarships that “discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, and/or sex in violation of Title VI and Title IX, respectively.”

The Legal Insurrection Foundation is a conservative nonprofit based in Rhode Island and founded by Cornell Law School professor William A. Jacobson. According to the Equal Protection Project’s website, their mission is to advance “the fair treatment of all persons without regard to race or ethnicity.” The group’s “guiding principle is that there is no ‘good’ form of racism. The remedy for racism is never more racism.”

At the University of Central Arkansas, ten scholarships are in question, including six that are specifically allocated for or give preference to African American students. At the University of California, Los Angeles, the Equal Protection Project claims 13 scholarships violate Title VI or Title IX, including one dedicated to African American students.
