James L. Moore III, Distinguished Professor of Urban Education in the College of Education and Human Ecology at Ohio State University, has received the 2025 Living Legend Award from the National Alliance of Black School Educators. The alliance bestows this recognition on leaders in the African American community with a demonstrated commitment to local, regional, and national progression of the community.
An Ohio State faculty member for over two decades, Dr. Moore is currently on loan to the U. S. National Science Foundation, serving as the assistant director for its Directorate of STEM Education. Prior to this appointment, he was the vice provost for diversity and inclusion and chief diversity officer and executive director of the university’s Todd Anthony Bell National Resource Center on the African American Male. As a scholar, he has conducted extensive research on the experiences of African American men in both K-12 and higher education settings, as well as other societal domains. Throughout his career, Dr. Moore has authored over 180 scholarly publications and given more than 200 scholarly lectures and presentations throughout the United States and around the world.
An HBCU graduate, Dr. Moore earned his bachelor’s degree in English education from Delaware State University. He received both his master’s degree and Ph.D. in counselor education from Virginia Tech.
