Historically Black South Carolina State University has signed a new agreement with the Commonwealth of the Bahamas that will open the door for Bahamian students to pursue an undergraduate degree from the HBCU.
Under the new agreement, the Ministry of Education and Technical and Vocational Training in the Bahamas will recruit, screen, and select an annual cohort of high-achieving students with demonstrated financial need over the next five years. These students will be admitted to the university and receive a $10,860 tuition discount through an in-state tuition abatement. The Ministry will then provide up to $10,000 per public-school scholar and $7,500 per private, transfer, or home school scholar each year to support students’ remaining costs.
Participating students will gain access to high-demand academic programs aligned with the Bahamas’ priority workforce areas, particularly in agriculture, agribusiness, and food sustainability.
“Today’s students deserve an education that stretches far beyond their hometowns,” said Alexander Conyers, president of South Carolina State University. “Welcoming scholars from the Bahamas brings the world to SC State and sends our impact across the globe. This is the kind of partnership that makes learning an adventure.”
