Two New Orleans-Based HBCUs Receive Large Donations From MacKenzie Scott

Billionaire philanthropist MacKenzie Scott has made two more major donations to historically Black universities. These gifts are Scott’s latest in a string of major investments in HBCUs over the past five years. To date, she has gifted some $1.2 billion to support HBCUs, the United Negro College Fund, and the Thurgood Marshall College Fund.

Xavier University of Louisiana received a $38 million unrestricted gift. Adding to her previous donation of $20 million in 2020, Scott has invested $58 million in Xavier in just five years. Her latest gift will directly support goals outlined in Xavier’s Centennial Capital Campaign, which include commitments to enhance affordability and expand student support and academic services.

“This generous gift from MacKenzie Scott fills us with profound gratitude,” said President Reynold Verret. “To receive such an investment near the close of our centennial year is both humbling and inspiring. These funds will enable us to expand our affordability initiatives, which directly support talented students from diverse backgrounds. Ms. Scott’s belief in Xavier’s mission strengthens our resolve to carry forward the legacy of Saint Katharine Drexel and prepare future generations to lead with truth, justice, and service. This gift affirms who we are — and who we are becoming — at a pivotal moment in our history.”

Dillard University in New Orleans was awarded a $19 million gift, which builds on Scott’s previous $5 million donation to Dillard in 2020. Administrators at Dillard plan to use Scott’s latest gift to accelerate strategic priorities that enhance student success, increase scholarship access, and bolster institutional advancement.

“If anyone ever doubts the difference one person can make, look no further than MacKenzie Scott and how her generosity will resonate across generations,” said President Monique Guillory. “This gift will strengthen the university at a moment when our mission has never been more urgent.”
