Prairie View A&M University in Texas recently announced the appointments of three new deans to oversee several academic units.

“These leadership appointments reflect PVAMU’s continued investment in student success, academic excellence, and institutional stewardship,” said Dr. Aashir Nasim, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs.

Effective April 1, Carmen R. Carter will serve as the inaugural dean of University College, a new academic unit created to strengthen the first two years of the undergraduate experience. The college will focus on providing key student support resources, such as academic advising, curriculum pathways, and early engagement efforts.

With over 20 years of leadership experience, Dr. Carter currently serves as associate vice provost for academic affairs at PVAMU. Throughout her career, she has gained an extensive background in academic policy, curriculum innovation, and student success initiatives.

Dr. Carter earned a master’s degree in higher education from the University of Iowa and a Ph.D. in higher education leadership from Colorado State University.

A professor of biology, Dr. Moore has served as director of PVAMU’s Honors Program for the past eight years. He first joined the HBCU’s faculty in 2009 as an assistant professor. During his tenure, he has been involved in numerous efforts relating to student success, including academic advising, recruitment, retention, inquiry-based learning, infusion of technology into student learning, funded research opportunities, service activities, and project administration.

Dr. Moore holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Jackson State University in Mississippi, a master’s degree in microbiology from Auburn University in Alabama, and a Ph.D. in microbiology from the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

Following one year of interim service, Aneika L. Simmons was named the permanent dean of the College of Business. Before coming to PVAMU, Dr. Simmons was a professor of management at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas, for nearly two decades. Her teaching expertise includes human resource management, organizational behavior, strategic management, and business policy.
