Jeffrey O. Smith Appointed Secretary of Education for Virginia

Virginia Governor Abigail Spencer has appointed Jeffrey O. Smith as the state’s next Secretary of Education.

With over three decades of experience in education, Dr. Smith has worked in both public school systems and academia. He has 15 years of superintendent experience, including eight years at Hampton City Schools and seven years at the Town of West Point. Earlier, he held key administrative roles with Amelia County Public Schools, Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools, and Newport News Public Schools. Additionally, Dr. Smith has taught as an adjunct faculty member with Old Dominion University in Norfolk and the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg. Currently, Dr. Smith is executive director and CEO of the Virginia Air and Space Science Center in Hampton.

“As a mother of three daughters in Virginia’s public schools, I understand the importance of making sure Virginia’s students are set up for success and the invaluable foundation that the Commonwealth’s schools provide for our next generation of leaders,” said Spanberger. “Dr. Smith’s decades of experience leading districts in Virginia gives the Commonwealth’s students a champion who I know will work tirelessly on their behalf — and I’m excited to work alongside him to strengthen our schools.”

“It is an honor to serve as a member of Governor Spanberger’s administration. I strongly support her Strengthening Virginia Schools Plan,” said Dr. Smith. “Together, we can advance a vision for a Commonwealth that is stronger, safer, and more affordable for all Virginians, ensuring that every learner has the opportunity to achieve and succeed.”

An HBCU graduate, Dr. Smith earned his bachelor’s degree in English education from Virginia Union University in Richmond. He holds a master’s degree in education administration and supervision from Virginia Commonwealth University and a doctorate in educational leadership and policy studies from Virginia Tech.
