Just one week after Kevin James was abruptly removed without cause from his position as president of Morris Brown College (See JBHE post), the HBCU’s board of trustees has reversed their decision, reinstating Dr. James as the college’s president.
“After careful review, the board determined that Dr. James’ separation from the college did not fully comply with the procedural and contractual requirements outlined in his employment agreement,” reads a statement from the board. “As fiduciaries of this institution, the Board recognizes its responsibility to adhere to established governance standards and to correct actions that fall short of those obligations.”
The statement continues, “The board acknowledges that this period has been disruptive and painful for members of the Morris Brown community. The board deeply regrets the harm this has caused our institution, students, families, donors, supporters, and Dr. James.”
In response to his reinstatement, Dr. James expressed his gratitude to the extended Morris Brown community for their support.
“We move forward not divided but aligned; anchored in our mission, guided by our Christian faith, and committed to excellence,” said Dr. James. “The work continues. Our immediate priorities are to begin the healing journey while continuing our focused preparation for our upcoming accreditation reaffirmation visit in two weeks. We will be ready.”
