New Leadership Appointments for Four Black Americans in Higher Education

Jazz M. Lewis is the new director of state government relations at the University of Maryland. Lewis recently stepped down from his role as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates, where he served as the House majority whip. He previously served as legislative director for the BlueGreen Alliance. Earlier, he was a senior policy advisor for U.S. Representative Steny H. Hoyer.

Lewis received his bachelor’s degree in government and politics and his master’s degree in public policy from the University of Maryland.

Jeremy Patterson was named director of athletics at historically Black Lane College in Jackson, Tennessee. He brings extensive experience in HBCU athletics to his new role. Most recently, Patterson was director of athletics at Rust College in Holly Springs, Mississippi. He also has a background in fundraising and external relations.

Patterson is an alumnus of Lane College.

April Robinson was appointed chief financial officer at Tennessee State University. With nearly two decades of experience in financial leadership, Robinson most recently led the New York state market for Diageo North America. She also has extensive experience in accounting, audits, mergers and acquisitions, due diligence, and global risk management.

Robinson received her bachelor’s degree in accounting from Tennessee State University and her MBA in global leadership from St. John’s University in New York City.

Reginald Miller is the new associate dean for research and innovation for the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. He comes to the HBCU after over two decades of service with the Mount Sinai Health System. For the past 11 years, he served in senior roles at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, including service as dean for research operations and infrastructure and director of the school’s HBCU Engagement Initiative.

Dr. Miller earned his bachelor’s degree in biology and doctor of veterinary medicine degree from Tuskegee University in Alabama. He completed a residency in laboratory animal and zoological medicine at the University of Rochester in New York.
