Higher Education Gifts or Grants of Interest to African Americans

Here is this week’s news of grants or gifts to historically Black colleges and universities or for programs of particular interest to African Americans in higher education.

The Rural Community Development Institute at historically Black Voorhees University in Denmark, South Carolina, was awarded a $500,000 HBCU Health Discovery Implementation Grant from the South Carolina Center for Rural and Primary Healthcare. Over the next two years, the funding will be used to expand and strengthen health initiatives on campus and throughout surrounding rural communities.

Tennessee State University recently received a $500,000 grant from FedEx to support the HBCU’s College of Business over the next four years. The funds will support students directly through internship, mentoring, and job placement opportunities; enhance the college’s enrollment and retention initiatives; and expand career services offerings such as interview preparation, training, and certification programs.

Kentucky State University received a $1.7 million grant through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture Capacity Building Grants program. The grant will support various projects across the HBCU, including research on the production and marketing of traditional and underutilized vegetable crops, new agriculture extension workshops and programs for local middle and high school students, and the development of new courses and certificates integrating agriculture, business, mathematics, and computer science.
