Middle Tennessee State University President Sidney McPhee Announces His Retirement

Sidney A. McPhee, the tenth president of Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), has announced his intent to retire when his contract expires in December. Following a two-semester sabbatical, Dr. McPhee plans to return to the university’s College of Education as a tenured professor.

Dr. McPhee has led MTSU for almost the entirety of the twenty-first century. Since assuming his presidency in January 2001, Dr. McPhee has overseen more than $2 billion in new construction, renovations, and improvements to the MTSU campus. Over the past 25 years, the university has created nearly 50 new graduate and undergraduate programs, two colleges, and more than 20 institutes and centers.

“Serving as President of Middle Tennessee State University has been the great honor of my professional life,” Dr. McPhee told the university’s board of trustees. “My family and I have been steadfast over the last quarter-century in our love for MTSU and this community and are deeply proud of our students, alumni, faculty, and staff. The work to continue the progress and success of our institution will not cease during the final months of my term.”

An HBCU alumnus, Dr. McPhee is a summa cum laude graduate of Prairie View A&M University in Texas. He holds a master’s degree from the University of Miami in Florida, and a doctorate in applied behavioral studies in education from Oklahoma State University.
