Three Black Scholars Selected for New Roles at Universities

Monica L. Baskin was appointed interim director of the Virginia Commonwealth University Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Baskin currently serves as the center’s deputy director and associate dean for cancer innovation in the VCU School of Medicine. She holds faculty appointments in the medical school’s division of hematology, oncology, and palliative care and in the division of social and behavioral sciences in the School of Public Health. Her research focuses on community-engaged approaches to understand and address factors related to lifestyle factors associated with cancer prevention and control.

Dr. Baskin is a graduate of Emory University, where she double-majored in psychology and sociology. She earned her master’s degree and Ph.D. in community counseling and counseling psychology from Georgia State University.

Christina Edwards Bailey was appointed to the Eskind Chair in Surgical Education at Vanderbilt University. Before coming to Nashville, Dr. Bailey taught at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Her research focuses on differences in health outcomes in patients with cancer as well as quality of life after cancer treatment.

Dr. Bailey is a graduate of Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, where she majored in animal science. She holds a master’s degree in clinical investigation from Vanderbilt University and a medical doctorate from Louisiana State University Health Science Center in Shreveport.

Tycie Coppett has been selected to serve as interim assistant dean for Yale College. Dr. Coppett, who teaches in Yale’s department of sociology, had been serving as residential dean of the university’s Silliman College. Before joining the Yale community in 2023, she spent several years with the Harvard Graduate School of Education, ultimately serving as director for master’s studies.

Dr. Coppett earned her bachelor’s degree in speech communication and her Ph.D in workforce education from the University of Georgia. She also holds a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of Phoenix.
