Historically Black Voorhees College in Denmark, South Carolina, has launched the Voorhees College Veterans Resource Center. It is the second HBCU in South Carolina to have such a center.
“As a South Carolina native and veteran, this is a proud moment,” said Abraham J. Turner, a retired United States Army major general. “There are less than 10 Veteran Resource Centers within Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and now Voorhees has been added to the list.”
The new center was established to sustain educational support programs involving application, admission, matriculation, graduation, and professional placement to attract military veterans, service members, and their dependents to pursue their academic and professional development interests and goals. The creation of the Veterans Resource Center was a collaborative effort between college administrators and military professionals.
Lee Odom has been named the director of the new Veterans Resource Center. She previously served as a veteran affairs coordinator for the college.
“As the director, I am excited for this opportunity and to be a part of a new development for Voorhees College. It is important to hit the ground running. We welcome the current and future VA students and we are happy they have a place to call home,” Odom said.
