Recently, the 30th Honda Campus All-Star Challenge National Championship Tournament was held in Torrance, California. Teams from 48 historically Black colleges and universities competed in an academic quiz contest for the national championship title.
Spelman College in Atlanta emerged as the winner of the competition, edging out Florida A&M University in the final match. This was the first time in the history of the competition that Spelman took home the top prize. The college will receive a $75,000 grant for finishing first. Jackson State University, last’s year winner, and Morehouse College made it to the final four teams competing in the semifinal round.
Members of the Spelman College team were Jessika Agyepong, Maati McKinney, Naomi Steplight, and Ariana Benson. The team was coached by Daniel Bascelli, coordinator of instructional technologies at Spelman College.
Since the inception of the competition, nearly $9 million in grants from Honda have provided support for scholarships, facility upgrades, and other investments to improve the student experience at historically Black colleges and universities.
