Fisk University Launches New Bachelor’s Degree in Data Science

Historically Black Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, has recently received approval from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACSCOC) to offer a bachelor of science degree program in data science.

The new program in data science will consist of a multi-disciplinary curriculum made up of courses that teach students how scientific methods, processes, algorithms, and systems can be used to extract knowledge and insights from structured and unstructured data.

“This program will open new doors for graduates of the university,” said the new program’s director Sajid Hussain.

In addition to the data science program, the Fisk University board of trustees has approved new degree offerings in criminal justice, homeland security, bioinformatics, and social justice. The homeland security program will be the only one of its kind in the state of Tennessee and the third at a HBCU. The new social justice program is designed to be a component of Fisk’s proposed Social Justice Institute, which will focus on Fisk’s long history of enhancing race relations in the United States. Additionally, the board also approved Fisk’s first online degree program in elected studies with a concentration on human development. All of these programs are still pending approval from the SACSCOC.
