Mickey L. Burnim Will Lead Coppin State University in Baltimore

Mickey L. Burnim has been named interim president of Coppin State University in Baltimore, Maryland. The historically Black university enrolls just under 2,900 students, 79 percent of whom are Black. Dr. Burnim will assume his new duties on July 1, 2019.

From 2006 to 2017, Dr. Burnim served as president of Bowie State University in Maryland. During his tenure, the university experienced significant increases in regional and national recognition, added majors in cybersecurity and information technology, opened three new buildings, grew enrollment and graduation rates, and undertook a successful fundraising campaign. During the summer of 2018, he served as interim president of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Earlier in his career he served as chancellor of Elizabeth City State University in North Carolina.

“We are grateful to Mickey Burnim for his ongoing service to the University System of Maryland,” said Robert Caret, chancellor of the University System of Maryland. “Dr. Burnim very capably guided the University of Maryland Eastern Shore on an interim basis last summer, and his considerable experience and perspective position him quite well to lead Coppin during the course of a search for President Thompson’s successor.”

Dr. Burnim holds a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from the University of North Texas, and a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
