In Memoriam: Maurice Stallworth Cherry

Maurice S. Cherry, the first chaplain at Paine College in Augusta, Georgia, passed away on May 28, 2019.

Dr. Cherry served as chaplain at Paine College from 1959 to 1975. While there, he and his wife, the late Dr. Joyce Cherry, served as professors. He also served on the committee that helped design Paine’s Gilbert-Lambuth Memorial Chapel. Additionally, he served as president of Texas College and was a professor at what is now Albany State University.

Dr. Cherry was a veteran pastor of several Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) Churches including Williams Memorial CME Church in Augusta, Georgia, and West Mitchell CME Church in Atlanta, Georgia. Under his leadership, the Board of Christian Education was reorganized and new programs launched to encourage the membership to become active Christians.

Dr. Cherry was a graduate of Paine College.

In Memoriam: Nathan Howard Cook, 1939-2024

Dr. Cook was a longtime faculty member and administrator at Lincoln University of Missouri. A full professor of biology, he held several leadership roles including vice president for academic affairs.
