The magazine U.S. News and World Report recently issued its annual rankings of the best colleges and universities in the United States. In addition to its rankings of the best national universities and liberal arts colleges, the magazine ranks regional colleges and universities and also the nation’s historically Black colleges and universities.
The top five HBCUs remained the same from last year’s ranking, although the order changed a bit. Spelman College in Atlanta was first and Howard University in Washington, D.C., was second. This was the same as a year ago. This was the 13th year in a row that Spelman College has topped the U.S. News rankings for HBCUs.
Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans moved up to third place from fifth place a year ago. Hampton University in Virginia moved from third to fourth, and Morehouse College tied with Hampton for fourth place.
Rounding out the top 10 positions are:
6. North Carolina A&T State University, up one spot from a year ago.
7. Florida A&M University, up from ninth a year ago.
8. Tuskegee University in Alabama, up from 15th last year.
9. Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, down two spots from last year.

Top-ranked HBCU Spelman College was ranked as the 57th best liberal arts college in the country, down six positions from a year ago. Howard University tied for 104th best university in the United States. A year ago, Howard ranked 89th.
