A Half Dozen African Americans Who Are Taking on New Administrative Roles in Higher Education

Bonita McClain Vinson is the inaugural vice chancellor of equity, diversity, and inclusion at North Central Texas College in Gainesville. She has been serving as dean of Health and Sciences at the college.

Dr. Vinson is a graduate of Mississippi State University, where she majored in educational psychology. She holds a master’s degree in counseling from Louisiana State University and a Ph.D. in educational administration from Texas A&M University.

Curtis Dean was appointed director of the ROTC program and director of the Evening/Weekend College at Livingstone College in Salisbury, North Carolina. He joined the staff at the college in 2003.

Dr. Dean is a graduate of Livingstone College, where he majored in business administration. He holds a master’s degree from the University of Phoenix and a doctorate in business administration from Walden University.

Danielle McBeth was appointed special assistant to the president for governmental relations at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee. She is a partner with Alcalde & Fay, a government and public affairs firm in Arlington, Virginia.

McBeth holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Florida A&M University. She earned her law degree from the Washington College of Law at American University in Washington, D.C.

Iessa Sutton was appointed campus operation officer for Berkeley College’s Newark, New Jersey, location. She has been on the staff at the college since 2012 serving as senior director of career services and campus operating officer at the Brooklyn location.

Sutton is a graduate of Clark Atlanta University, where she majored in psychology. She holds a master’s degree in organizational management from the University of Phoenix and is currently pursuing a doctorate in higher educational administration.

Herman L. Wood, Jr. is the new associate vice president of facilities management, planning, and construction at Delaware State University. Woods worked for 18 years for U.S. Facilities, Inc. of Philadelphia, where he was senior director of Operations and Supply Chain Management, Commercial and Government Services.

Woods is a graduate of Delaware State University, where he majored in mathematics. He holds a master’s degree in mathematics from Arcadia University.

Jerry Melton was named chief of police at Grambling State University in Louisiana. He has 26 years of law enforcement experience, most recently as director of security for Monroe Regional Airport.

Melton holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Northeast Louisiana University.
