Recently the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges voted to continue the accreditation probation of Southern Univerity New Orleans. The commission placed the university on probation this past summer and continues to have reservations about the university’s financial position.
The university has faced declining enrollments putting a strain on its financial position. In 2018, the university had an operating loss of more than $15 million. Some administrators were furloughed and recently the university announced plans to suspend intercollegiate athletics at the end of the current academic year.
James Ammons, interim chancellor of Southern University New Orleans, issued a statement that read in part that “we have taken proactive steps to assess and address all areas of concern including making tough budget cuts, developing a comprehensive enrollment plan, implementing aggressive fundraising efforts, and performing in-depth evaluations of all academic degrees and programs to ensure that we are optimizing our resources to strategically place the university and our students in the best position for growth and success.”
