Simmons University Scholar Named Distinguished Educator of the Year in Social Work

Johnnie Hamilton-Mason has been presented with the Distinguished Educator of the Year award by the National Association of Black Social Workers. Dr. Hamilton-Mason is a professor and holds the Eva Whiting White Endowed Chair at Simmons University’s School of Social Work in Boston.

“Dr. Hamilton-Mason is a tremendous scholar, researcher, and educator, and I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this honor,” said Stephanie Berzin, dean of Simmons University’s College of Social Sciences, Policy, and Practice.

Professor Hamilton-Mason’s scholarship and research interests center on African American women and families, the intersection of cross-cultural theory and practice, and HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment.

Dr. Hamilton-Mason has been on the faculty at Simmons since 1991. From 2004- 2007, she served as director of the doctoral program at the School of Social Work. Dr. Hamilton-Mason is currently on the editorial board for Health and Social Work, the Journal of Social Work Education and Smith College Studies in Social Work. She is the co-author of Systemic Racism in the United States: Scaffolding as Social Construction (Springer, 2018).
