Four African American Appointed to Diversity Roles at Colleges and Universities

Jarvis Marlow-McCowin has joined the diversity and inclusion team at Cornell University as associate director for multicultural student leadership and empowerment. He was coordinator of inclusion at Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York. He has also served as the assistant director of the Multicultural Center at the State University of New York, Delhi.

Marlow-McCowin received a master’s degree in educational policy and leadership studies, with a concentration in higher education and student affairs, from the University of Iowa. He is pursuing a Ph.D. in community research and action from Binghamton University in New York.

Eric Reed is the new dean of student access, success, equity, and inclusion at Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Dr. Reed was director of TRiO Student Support Services at Eastern Michigan University.

Dr. Reed holds a bachelor’s degree in health administration and a master of public administration degree from Central Michigan University. He recently completed a doctorate in educational leadership at Eastern Michigan University.

Elizabeth Tovar was selected to serve as the executive officer for diversity, equity, and inclusion at the University of Iowa. She has served as interim associate vice president for diversity, equity, and inclusion since August 2020 and has worked in the university’s athletics office since 2013.

Dr. Tovar has a bachelor’s degree in psychology, a master’s degree in clinical psychology, and a P.D. in higher education, all from the University of Kansas.

Brian Harper, an associate professor at the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the New York Institute of Technology, has taken on new duties as the inaugural vice president for equity and inclusion at the educational institution.

Dr. Harper is a graduate of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, where he majored in biology and African American studies. He earned his medical degree at the SUNY Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse and added a master of public health degree from Columbia University.
