Two Universities Appoint African American Scholars to Dean Positions

Darryl Scriven has been appointed dean of the  School of Arts & Sciences at Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York, effective April 4. He will also serve as a fellow in the Shipley Center for Innovation at the university. Dr. Scriven has been serving as dean of the College of Arts, Sciences, Business, and Education as well as the John W. and Anna H. Hanes Distinguished Professor in the Humanities at Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina. Earlier in his career, Dr. Scriven was an associate professor of philosophy and chair of the department of visual arts, humanities, and theatre at Florida A&M University.

Dr. Scriven is a graduate of Florida A&M University, where he double majored in philosophy and mathematics. He earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in philosophy at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Taléa Drummer-Ferrell is the new dean of students at Kent State University in Ohio. She is the first Black woman to hold the position. Dr. Drummer-Ferrell was director of the Student Multicultural Center at the university.

Dr. Drummer-Ferrell is a graduate of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where she majored in family studies. She holds a master’s degree in college student personnel from the University of Louisville and a Ph.D. in higher education administration from Kent State University.

Racial Slurs Found on a Board at the Elizabethtown College Student Center

A racial slur was found written on a board on the second floor of the Baugher Student Center at Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania. The next day, another racial slur was found at the same location.
