The magazine U.S. News and World Report recently issued its annual rankings of the best colleges and universities in the United States. In addition to its rankings of the best national universities and liberal arts colleges, the magazine ranks regional colleges and universities and also the nation’s historically Black colleges and universities.
Spelman College in Atlanta was ranked as the best HBCU and Howard University in Washington, D.C., was second. This was the same as a year ago. This was the 15th year in a row that Spelman College has topped the U.S. News rankings for HBCUs.
Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans remained in third place up from fifth place three years ago. Tuskegee University in Alabama Hampton University in Virginia, and Morehouse College in Atlanta tied for fourth place in the rankings.
Rounding out the top 10 positions are:
7. Florida A&M University
8. North Carolina A&T State University
9. Fisk Univerity in Nashville
10. Claflin University in Orangeburg, South Carolina
10 (tie) Delaware State University
Top-ranked HBCU Spelman College was ranked as the 54th best liberal arts college in the country, the same spot it held a year ago. Howard University ranked as the 83rd best national university, down from number 80 a year ago. That was the highest rank Howard had ever achieved in the U.S. News survey.
Congratulations to Claflin University and the other ranked HBCU’s. The work towards excellence is never ending. The faculty, staff, students and alumni have shown that they are up to the task.
Are you kidding me Eugene! Claflin University (it should be still called “College”) has an abysmal graduation rate of a staggering between 51-57 % depending on whose data you’re using. The highly subjective and meaningless ranking they received from the racist US News and World Report carries no substantive weight. In other words Eugene, whoever did the evaluation of Claflin University needs another block of instruction on how to quantitatively and qualitatively evaluate a higher education institution. Those aligned with the HBCU community should not be pleased with the “separate and unequal” ranking system from USNWR because it’s downright insulting. For those who dissent, I challenge you by asking when was the last time you seen a similar ranking system for HSIs or TCUs? Hey Eugene, were you QMPed which explains retiring as an O-3? Just curious!
Time to step up the game, Morgan State!
Hey Segundo,
You’re absolutely correct about Morgan State University (Morgan). Morgan has morphed into a place mired into a place where faculty, staff, and students are mistreated on numerous levels.
The incompetent Morgan president (and Board of Regents) should have been fired years ago for his administrative malfeasance along with his desire to turn Morgan into a “non-HBCU”. For example, students at Morgan have been “killed” , violently assaulted, robbed and raped during the David Wilson’s tenure with little being done. For those who dissent, I challenge you to check Morgan’s Clery Report since his tenure.
