When James Ammons announced that he was stepping down as president of Florida A&M University last week, he said he would remain in office until October 11. But now the board of trustees has decided to make Ammons’ resignation effective immediately.
Larry Robinson has been chosen as interim president. Since March, Dr. Robinson has been provost and vice president for academic affairs. Previously, he was serving as a special assistant to the president. Robinson had previously served as provost from 2003 to 2005. He has also served as vice president for research and chief operating officer of the university. In 2010, he took a leave of absence from the university to serve as assistant secretary for conservation and management at the U.S. Commerce Department. He returned to FAMU last November.
“I am grateful for this opportunity to serve at this critical time in the university’s history,” said Robinson. “There is work to be done and I stand ready to do my absolute best to keep FAMU on its path of success.”
Dr. Robinson is a summa cum laude graduate of the University of Memphis. He earned a Ph.D. in nuclear chemistry from Washington University in St. Louis.
