Four African Americans Who Have Been Named to New Administrative Positions in Higher Education

Jeffery T. Burgin Jr. is the new vice chancellor for student affairs at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. He was vice president of student affairs at Talladega College in Alabama.

Dr. Burgin completed his bachelor’s degree in African American studies at the University of Cincinnati and his master’s degree in college student personnel at Ohio University in Athens. He also holds a doctorate in higher education administration from the University of Alabama.

Penya M. Moses has been named chief operating officer at Grambling State University in Louisiana. She has served in various roles with the State of Louisiana Department of Children and Family Service’s Bureau of General Counsel. She has also taught business law and tax accounting at Nuñez Community College in Chalmette, Louisiana.

Moses earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Grambling State University. She holds a juris doctorate from Loyola University School of Law, and a master’s degree in taxation from Villanova University School of Law in Pennsylvania.

The board of trustees of the Peralta Community College District in Oakland, California, has appointed Timothy Thomas as the director of public safety serving the district and its four colleges. A former police officer, Thomas has served as an adjunct faculty member in criminal justice at the Institute of Technology–Modesto and at Carrington College’s Stockton campus where he directed the criminal justice corrections program.

Thomas earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from California State University, Stanislaus. He holds a master’s degree in criminology from American Public University.

Terri Stewart has been named director of campus safety at Colgate University in Hamilton, New York. She has been serving as director of the department of campus safety at Nazareth College in Rochester, New York. She will take up her new position on January 3.

A graduate of Syracuse University with a bachelor’s degree in communications, Stewart earned a master’s degree in organizational management and development at Trinity Washington University.
