Lena Walton to Serve as Provost at Alabama A&M University

Alabama A&M University has announced the appointment of Lena Walton as interim provost and vice president of academic affairs. Daniel Wims, who had been serving as provost and vice president of academic affairs and research, is the new president of Alabama A&M University (see JBHE post), necessitating the appointment of a scholar to fill the provost position. Dr. Walton had been serving as the dean of the College of Education, Humanities and Behavioral Sciences at the university.

Dr. Walton has served as dean of the College of Education, Humanities and Behavioral Sciences since 2017. Earlier, Dr. Walton served as assistant and associate dean in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of the District of Columbia. She served on the faculty there for 15 years. Dr. Walton began her academic career as a lecturer and, subsequently, as senior lecturer at the College of Agriculture, Science and Education in Port Antonio, Jamaica.

Dr. Walton holds a bachelor’s degree in secondary science education from the University of the West Indies in Mona, Jamaica. She earned a Ph.D. in elementary education from the University of Alberta in Edmonton.
