Four African Americans Who Have Been Appointed to University Diversity Positions

Cindy Crusto, a professor of psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine, has been appointed associate dean for gender equity and director of the Office for Women in Medicine and Science at the medical school. She came to Yale 23 years ago as a postdoctoral intern.

Dr. Crusto is a graduate of Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York. She holds a master’s degree in clinical/community psychology from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and a Ph.D. in clinical/community psychology from the University of South Carolina.

Melvin Beavers, an assistant professor in the department of rhetoric and writing at the University of Arkansas Little Rock, has been selected as the inaugural chancellor’s fellow for diversity, equity, and inclusion. Dr. Beavers came to the university in 2015 as an instructor. He is also the director of first-year writing at the university.

Dr. Beavers earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Central Arkansas. He holds a master’s degree in interdisciplinary studies and a doctorate in higher education administration from the University of Arkansas Little Rock.

Krishauna Hines-Gaither was named the inaugural vice president for equity, diversity, and justice at Mount Saint Mary’s University in Los Angeles. She was the interim vice president for diversity, equity, and inclusion and the director of the Intercultural Engagement Center at Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Dr. Hines-Gaither has a bachelor’s degree in Spanish language and literature from Salem College in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She holds a master’s degree in Spanish language teacher education from Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and a doctorate in cultural studies/critical theory and analysis from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Sharon Perry-Fantini has been appointed vice president for diversity, equity, and inclusion at Iowa State University. She was vice provost for equity, access, and opportunity and Title IX coordinator and an associate professor of management at Tiffin University in Ohio. She joined the faculty at Tiffin in 2009.

Dr. Perry-Fantini holds bachelor’s degrees in organizational management and human resources management and an MBA from Tiffin University. She earned a Ph.D. in human resources and organization management from Capella University.
